  • Aloha!!!

Hi! This is the photography and lifestyle blog of Sheena Bean of Photography In the Light. I am a lifestyle photographer based in Kauai, Hawaii. I moved here with my family in January of 2015. My husband is the youth pastor at Lihue Missionary Church and we are raising three little world changers, Noakea, Banyan, and Avenlea Wren. This is His story, our story, and little snippets of life on a 562 square mile rock in the middle of the Pacific.

Eastern North Carolina Photographer – Families – The Thorp’s

Sometimes, being a photographer in North Carolina, and specifically in the small town in which we live, can be uninspiring location-wise.  I’m probably going to get flamed for saying that, but after living in Hawaii, there are times I bemoan the fact that I don’t have lush mountains or turquoise waters to shoot around.  However, there are these little pocket locations that make my heart soar.  Oftentimes, they are tucked away in some otherwise unassuming location and it’s often my clients that hint me on to them.  This gorgeous spot on the river is the in back of a neighborhood by the water and then evening sun coming through the trees is simply etherial.

I did this family session for my sweet friend, Jen and her duo of Calebs…..hubby, “Big Caleb,” and son, “Little Caleb.”  This is the 4th session I have been able to do with this gorgeous little group, and it’s my favorite so far.  The first time I met the Thorps, little Caleb was just 5 months old and he stole my heart with his blonde curls and big blue eyes.  He has grown into a busy and mischievous little 2 year old who is so fun to hang out with.  When Jen told me the location I wanted to shoot, it was like an “ah-ha” moment.  I had been back there a handful of times, but had never considered shooting there.  It’s definitely going to be used again, though.  The light was just ridiculously perfect.  I could shoot there every day and twice on Sunday’s and not grow tired of it.

The blue truck you will see in some of the shots is my husbands second baby, Ole’ Bessy.  She’s a ’65 Ford and he is generous enough to drive it to locations for me and wrangle the Tres Frijoles while I shoot.  Jen was so creative and had some fantastic ideas for her session, so it made my job really easy.  I say it all the time, but I really do have the best clients.  They are always so inspired and crafty and come up with these amazingly fun ideas for unique and memorable sessions; being a photographer is so much fun when you get clients like that.
