  • Aloha!!!

Hi! This is the photography and lifestyle blog of Sheena Bean of Photography In the Light. I am a lifestyle photographer based in Kauai, Hawaii. I moved here with my family in January of 2015. My husband is the youth pastor at Lihue Missionary Church and we are raising three little world changers, Noakea, Banyan, and Avenlea Wren. This is His story, our story, and little snippets of life on a 562 square mile rock in the middle of the Pacific.

  • We would love to hear from you! Please call, email, or facebook us if you have any questions.

Sheena

Q: So, I see your name is Sheena.  That’s all I know about you, though.  Who are you?

A: We’re off to a good start!  I’m Sheena.  I’m a follower of Christ, first and foremost.  Everything I am and everything I will ever do is for Him and through Him.  Secondly, I am a wife to a crazy dreamer/adventurer/boat builder/stud of a guy named Austin.  We tied the knot in June of 2004 and have been navigating life together ever sense.  He is my biggest fan and most unlikely critic.  Thirdly, and most noticeably, I am a mamma to our three little world changers.  Noakea, our oldest son was born in Jan. of 2007.  Banyan, his little amigo and partner in crime was born in August of 2010.  Our little peanut daughter, Avenlea, joined the family in October of 2012.

Q: Your photography is different than what I’ve seen before.  Do you have a specific style?

A: As a person, I am drawn to the unscripted moments in life, and my photography tends to follow suit.  I love to catch the in-between moments that happen durning every day life and I try to have the same attitude toward photography.  While there is always value in formal shots of an individual or family, my favorite pictures from a session are always the ones that come in the “in between” moments.  During our session, I will offer some ideas for poses, but by in large, the session will lean toward capturing the natural and unplanned moments that really make your child or family who they are.  I can’t encourage you enough to remember to breathe, relax, and think of your session as a chance to unplug from your day-to-day life and have an hour or two to just “be.”

Q: How did you get started on this path?

A: As long as I can remember, I have had an interest in photography.  I come from a BIG HUGE family of 8 children, and I have lots of memories of snagging my parents 35mm camera and making my younger siblings pose for me.  My mom has loads of pictures I took as a kid of my friends and siblings modeling for me.  As I got older, I tinkered around with film photography and took some photography classes in college.  I spent a period of time working as an assistant for a wedding photographer in Wilmington, NC, where I attended college at UNCW.  After getting married and moving to Hawaii, my interest in photography took a back burner to other pursuits….i.e., surfing, hiking, spear diving, ect.  When my oldest son was born in 2007, my in-laws gifted me a Nikon D40 and my love for photography was reignited.  It didn’t take long until I was back to taking pictures of anyone and everyone who would let me, and the rest is history!

Q: What are some of your other hobbies?

A: I love anything artistic, crafty, or DIY.  After photography, sewing is probably my favorite activity.  I love to make clothes for myself and my daughter.  I also enjoy the outdoors and am an avid surfer, lawn mower, swing pusher, and dog walker.

Q: What is your favorite place you’ve ever been?

A:  Kauai, Hawaii.  Hands down.  Most. Gorgeous. Place. On. Earth.  I’d move there in a hot minute if I could.

If you have any other questions for me, or if you read this and thought, “dang, we should be friends,” let’s hang out!  I am a self-confessed java junkie and would love to get together for an iced latte!
