  • Aloha!!!

Hi! This is the photography and lifestyle blog of Sheena Bean of Photography In the Light. I am a lifestyle photographer based in Kauai, Hawaii. I moved here with my family in January of 2015. My husband is the youth pastor at Lihue Missionary Church and we are raising three little world changers, Noakea, Banyan, and Avenlea Wren. This is His story, our story, and little snippets of life on a 562 square mile rock in the middle of the Pacific.

  • We would love to hear from you! Please call, email, or facebook us if you have any questions.

The Bean Family Chronicles | “Playground Playdate, or She Discovered the Swings”

Lugging around my “Big Girl Camera” is something I don’t do very often unless i’m using it to shoot a photo session.  For multiple reasons, I am pretty cautious about where I bring it and when I use it.  Besides the size of the camera, I can’t really afford to replace it should it break or should it get lost.  That said, I do feel a little bit guilty sometimes that I own such a nice camera and don’t use it more to take day-to-day pictures of my kids.  When a last minute playdate popped up with some of our favorite friends, I took the opportunity to bring along The Beast and get some lifestyle type snaps of the kids playing.  Noakea, unfortunately, wasn’t with us this morning, so this post is definitely Banyan and Avenlea heavy.

If you have a DSLR camera and don’t know how to use it or are afraid to to bring it along with you, I can’t encourage you enough to learn to use your camera and start carrying it around.  I heard it said once that “the best camera is the one you have with you,” and I couldn’t agree more, but in a world where most of our snaps are on our phones and we rarely print them, I believe that taking the effort to take quality pictures of the day-to-day interactions of our families is well worth the effort.  Pictures like these are the ones i’m going to look back on and be transported back in time by the smiles and faces i’ve captured.  Sometimes I’m worried about being seen as that mom on the playground snapping pictures instead of interacting, but I think it’s possible to do both at the same time.  I don’t take the camera with me very often, but these precious moments frozen in time sure bring me a lot of joy and I know they will for years to come.

The swings…..we have one in the backyard, but for some reason, she’d never used one until today.  Fell.  In.  Love.

I’m a sucker for symmetry.

Oh, Banyan.  His looks have spared his life x1000 times, at least.

Avenlea and Callie have a love/hate/love (more love than hate) relationship.  They were feelin the love today <3 <3

Must be first.  All the time.

The Bean Family Chronicles | PRYC Sailing Camp 2014

One of the highlights of the summer for us is attending sailing camp.  We live on a lazy little river that leads out to the Albemarle Sound, and every July the river gets overrun by rascally kid learning how to sail.  There is a lot of boat tipping, a lot of crashing, and a TON of fun!  This is Noakea’s second year participating and we are so thankful for the awesome volunteers who make it possible.  If you ever wondered what it’s like to teach a bunch of 7-16 year olds how to sail, just imagine trying to get a herd of cats to play freeze tag…..its pretty hilarious and a little bit chaotic.  That said, the instructors somehow manage to impart to the kids a love of sailing and it seems to be all they can talk about for weeks to come.  I snapped a handful of shots of the kids toward the end of the day last week, most of them unedited…..just like the kids:)

Wilmington North Carolina Maternity Photographer | Olivia Cotton

I’ m so excited to share this session!  This amazing couple are dear friends of Austin’s and mine.  Austin and Andrew went to high school together and after a good 5-6 year period of not being in touch, we reconnected and have become so thankful for Andrew and Olivia’s friendship in our lives.  They are expecting their first baby in just a few weeks and we can’t wait to get a peek of the little princess!  Sometime about a first pregnancy and all the excitement, anticipation, fear, and roller coast of emotions is just so special.  I know that Andrew and Olivia are going to be awesome parents, and I can hardly wait to meet the newest member of their family!!

Eastern North Carolina Lifestyle Newborn Photography | Allison Janz

Lifestyle newborn sessions are starting to gain popularity, and it’s easy to understand why.  The first few weeks with a new baby go by so quickly.  In between middle-of-the-night feedings, the umpteenth outfit change, screaming baths, and enough diapers to fill a small zip code, it is hard to remember the moments of bliss and serenity that seem to get lost in the chaos sometimes.  Lifestyle newborn sessions allow you to capture the feel of those first few days in a raw, candid, and unscripted way that traditional newborn portraiture just doesn’t do.  I have been shooting my newborn with a more lifestyle feel over the last 6 months or so, and it has absolutely changed the way I feel about newborn sessions. What used to mean loading a ton of props into the car, stressing about whether the baby would sleep, and worrying about finding the perfect light in a new house has now become a chance for me to connect with families and get to capture the precious moments of newborn baby love.

Elizabeth City Family Photographer | Jones Family Session

Family pictures.  Love em or hate em, it is so important to take the time to document the seasons of our families growing and changing.  I think a lot of the time, and I speak for myself, we moms just dont like to be in front of the camera.  We all know we’re our own worst critics, and I know I always shy away from getting in front of the camera because I usually don’t like pictures of myself.  I think that it is such an important thing, though, to take the time and spend the money to have pictures taken of our families.  As much as we tend to loathe seeing ourselves on film, we have to remember that it is a gift to our children to have pictures of their parents to cherish for a lifetime.  I am so honored to have the privilege to shoot families like this one, the Jones’.  I have known this family for over 13 years and if there is one thing I can say for sure about them, it is that family means everything to them.  These children are not going to grow up wondering what true love or committed marriage looks like.  They’re not going to wonder what it looks like to love God and serve Him as a family.  Jason and Allison are as solid as it gets and being able to spend time with them and see the beautiful dynamic that exists in this family is a sweet gift.  I am so indebted to the way they have shaped my own views on parenting and family.  Every time I get a chance to shoot this family, I walk away a better person than I was when I started.  I hope you guys enjoy these pictures as much as I enjoy the family in them!  Love you guys, Jones family!!!
