  • Aloha!!!

    Hi! This is the photography and lifestyle blog of Sheena Bean of Photography In the Light. I am a lifestyle photographer based in Kauai, Hawaii. I moved here with my family in January of 2015. My husband is the youth pastor at Lihue Missionary Church and we are raising three little world changers, Noakea, Banyan, and Avenlea Wren. This is His story, our story, and little snippets of life on a 562 square mile rock in the middle of the Pacific.

Nautical Family Session {Thorpe Family}

Disclaimer: This session is legitimate eye-candy.  Hot mamma? CHECK!  Studly dad? CHECK!  Ridiculously adorable blonde boy with curls? CHECK!

Now that i’ve gotten that out of the way, get a load of this beautiful family.  Jennifer called me a few days before this session asking if we could fit it in.  Her sister-in-law

owns a little boutique and had sent her these fantastic outfits to use for some advertising.  She asked if I knew of a good nautical location to do the session and I

knew the marina would fit the bill to a “T.”  We fit this little session in in the 20 minute window before sunset, but we got so many lovely pictures in that little

window of time.  Having gorgeous models and divine lighting sure made this photographer love her job!

A little lovey moment is pretty much out of the question when you have a two year old boy in the mix!

Norfolk Botanical Garden Family Session {Storie Family}

If I had to choose one location to shoot all of my photo sessions, this would be the place.  The Norfolk Botanical Garden is about an hour from Elizabeth City, but it is so worth the drive.  This place is absolutely gorgeous and there are so many beautiful little hideaways that it’s impossible to get it all in.  I am so appreciative when my clients understand the value of choosing a good location for their portrait sessions.  There’s no “one thing” that makes for a well executed photo shoot, but location is definitely a big part of it.  You can have great styling and be a talented photographer, but a spectacular location can take your pictures from good to amazing.  Ok, enough about the garden, let me tell you about this awesome family.

The first time I did a photo session for the Storie family was about two years ago.  Miss Azlyn was just a couple months old and her four big brothers were so sweet to their new baby sister.  Fast forward a couple years and they are still equally sweet to her, but she has definitely become a personality of her own.  I got a kick out of seeing her interact with her older bros and seeing her girly side coexist with her tough side.  For a family with 5 children, I am always so impressed with what a great job these kids do at getting their pictures taken.  I never have a problem getting enough good shots of this beautiful family.  I hope you enjoy seeing these as much as I enjoyed taking them!

Poor Azlyn.  They tried so hard to get her to sit with them.  It wasnt happening.

Oh, you know, just looking gorgeous after 5 children.  Isn’t she lovely <3

Families {Thorpe} – Sneak Peek!!!

When this gorgeous mamma and her equally eye-candy-ish (yes, I made that word up) family asked me a couple days ago if we could do a last minute photo shoot, I had to say yes!  When they showed up at the marina in these adorable outfits, my heart did a little flip-flop and I couldn’t get behind the lens fast enough.  Jen’s sister-in-law owns a cute boutique and she needed some advertising shots of these cute clothes for Mother’s Day.  I loved being able to really make the most of the nautical vibe and we had so much fun.  The first time I shot this adorable family, little Caleb was just a few months old.  It has been so fun watching him grow and seeing him turn into a rambunctious, adventurous, and brave little boy.  Here’s your sneak peek, Jen!!!  Wait till you see the rest!

Bean Crafty {The Norah Dress, by MouseHouse Creations}

It’s been awhile since I did a sewing post, so I thought i’d share this little dress with you.  I found the fabric on a vintage ladies skirt from the Goodwill and as soon as I saw it, I knew it’d be a perfect match for this pattern.  This dress has a bunch of options included in the pattern, including long sleeves, a little tie that goes under the collar, and a tunic length.  It goes all the way from 12 mos to size 12, so it’s definitely going to be a keeper for us.  The dress came together really easily.  It took me about two hours to sew it with a lot of kid interruptions along the way.  You can purchase the pattern on etsy, at https://www.etsy.com/listing/166486342/the-norah-dress-and-tunic-pdf-sewing?ref=shop_home_active_1.

The dress is a simple A-line shape with an optional peter pan collar.  This was my first time in years doing a collar or sleeves and it came together really easily.

The back of the dress has an easy to sew keyhole opening with a loop and button closure.  No zippers or button holes!
